Where is England’s best fish and chip shop?
Fish and chips is one of the most iconic British dishes. It’s a tasty treat that’s loved by millions and it wouldn’t be a great British summer without tucking into an indulgent portion of fish and chips beside the sea. With summer days looming, there is no better time to hunt down the best chippies in the country to guarantee yourself that perfect summer seaside experience. But where is England’s best fish and chip shop? We’re about to find out!
Visit England’s best chippies
This year’s National Fish & Chip Awards by Seafish have unfortunately been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic which forced many of the country’s chippies to temporarily close their doors last year. However, looking back at the 2020 winner, The Cod’s Scallops in Nottingham took the title. They were closely followed by Shap Chippy in Cumbria and Fish & Chips @ Western Grove in Chester. Previous winners have included Krispies in Exmouth (2019), Millers Fish and Chips in Haxby, Yorkshire (2018), and Kingfisher Fish & Chips in Plymouth (2017).
Although not quite the same as the National title, Fry Magazine – a magazine dedicated to fish and fast food – announced their top 50 UK chippies in early April 2021. The list is comprised of fish and chip shops from across the country, stretching from Newcastle in the north all the way down to Cornwall in the south. Four of the listed chippies are in Cumbria, with Norfolk coming a close second with three top fish and chip shops. But no matter where you are in the UK, there’s bound to be a winning chippie near you!
What it takes to be the best
We all know what good fish and chips entails. Golden, crispy batter, succulent and flaky fish and chips that are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Yet, being crowned as England’s best fish and chip shop requires much more. Chippies that have good customer service, clean and welcoming shops, and support sustainable fishing were all ranked more highly by the judges.
Packaging also plays a crucial role, both in brand recognition, enhancing their food offerings, and creating a memorable impression for customers. Although fish and chip restaurants do exist, it is primarily a takeaway food and needs appropriate branded packaging such as custom printed boxes and greaseproof paper. England’s best fish and chip shops have not forgotten this – their food is delicious, their customer service second-to-none, and their custom printed packaging ties everything together nicely.
PackGenie also offers custom printed wooden cutlery, including spoons, knives, forks and fish and printed fish and printed chip forks that will be sure to compliment your custom printed fish and chip boxes.
