Your customers care about eco friendly packaging!
The public is leaning increasingly towards minimal and eco-friendly packaging when making purchasing decisions, according to research.
The Nielsen Global Survey found 52% of respondents said their sustainable purchase decisions are influenced by packaging. Of those who will pay extra for sustainable products and those who check the packaging for sustainable labelling, over half are millennials (those born between the early 1980s and late 1990s), the study showed.
Growing demand for biodegradable packaging will continue to rise, as consumers become more and more aware of environmental issues. Consumers will come to expect green packaging as the norm! Consumers have the power to effect your sales. Research shows millennials and Gen Zs are seeking out responsible businesses and products; the demographic most likely to spend money eating out. If you want them spending money with your business then you need to think green and shout about it.

What does Biodegradable mean?
Biodegradable refers to the ability of materials to break down and return to nature. In order for packaging products or materials to qualify as biodegradable, they must completely break down and decompose into natural elements within a short time after disposal – typically a year or less. The ability to biodegrade within landfills helps to reduce the buildup of waste, contributing to a safer, cleaner and healthier environment.
What does Compostable mean?
Compostable materials are similar to biodegradable materials, as they are both intended to return to the earth safely. However, compostable materials go one step further by providing the earth with nutrients once the material has completely broken down. These materials are added to compost piles, which are designated sites with specific conditions dependent on wind, sunlight, drainage and other factors. While biodegradable materials are designed to break down within landfills, compostable materials require special composting conditions. Compostable packaging linings made from PLA or Bio-Plastics come from organic sources like Corn Starch. In the presence of water, PLA breaks down by being dissolved in water and added to compost for safe disposal
What does Recyclable mean?
Recycling is a process to change materials into new products to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, reduce energy usage, reduce air pollution and water pollution by reducing the need landfill and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
Reducing your environmental impact
The importance of eco friendly food packaging extends past getting consumer attention – it also makes a real impact on the environment. According to the European Organization for Packaging and the Environment (EUROPEN), companies helped decrease the amount of packaging waste ending up in landfills by almost 50 percent.
So what are the benefits of you doing your bit for the environment?
- You will be reducing carbon in your business uses.
- You will divert waste away from environmentally damaging landfill.
- You will make a positive change towards reducing air, water and soil pollution .
- You will help to reduce the amount of new/virgin material needed to make packaging products.
In January 2018 eleven leading world brands, retailers, and packaging companies are working towards using 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging by 2025 - Amcor, Ecover, evian, L’Oréal, Mars, M&S, PepsiCo, The Coca-Cola Company. This shows a massive commitment to change consumption habits of packaging on a global level and wont be long before it’s the norm.
